55 years ago or so my father David and grandfather Leonard started a small packaging business named Knickerbocker Box and eventually changed the name to what it is today.
It began with a rotary dialed phone call.
“Son,” my grandfather said, “I want you to start a packaging business with me.”
My dad was had just graduated from Ithaca College and dreamed of using his creative gifts in the business arena. However, he didn’t take joy in the idea of being a grind it out, pound the pavement salesman (a role he would have to fulfill to participate in his dad’s dream).
When asked why he abandoned his own dreams to start a packaging business with his father my dad stated simply, “My dad needed me so I said yes.”
I tell this story because it is at the root of what Specialty Box longs to be. We started with a value to family. As much as it is possible we approach our customers and suppliers like family. And, most of all, Daphne, Ray, Tim, Jess, Chelsea, James and Jason (our team members) are all counted as family.
Now we have a new sister.
