My wife's birthday is on August 11th and our wedding anniversary is on August 26. Unfortunately, we were not together on her birthday. Jennie and Piper were in New York and I was all alone in Michigan =(
Still, despite our geographic challenges, Jennie dropped a hint about her desired birthday gift. The "hint" was "I'd like to go see Celtic Thunder in Chicago or Detroit." She wasn't at all vague.
A few nights ago after I put Piper to sleep, I asked Jennie if she would like her belated birthday present. Her eyes lit up.
I handed Jennie three very nice hand bags (I'll never understand why having more than one handbag is at all desirable). The bags were packed inside one another. Inside the last bag was a set of tickets.
Jennie's face fell. The set of tickets was for "ONE NIGHT OF QUEEN". It is a spectacular live concert, recreating the look, sound, pomp and showmanship of Jennie's favorite rock band of all time.
Jennie's response: "Oh...that will be fun...(sigh)..."
My bride, much according to my devious plan, was clearly disappointed and she tried, quite unsuccessfully, to hide it. I encouraged her to talk but she wouldn't bite. After watching an episode of West Wing in silence I asked how she was doing. Still she didn't open up. Finally, I asked if she was unhappy with her birthday present. She said something like, "It's fine. It will be OK."
I paused for a moment, threw a pillow at her and then announced, "I'm taking you to Chicago for our anniversary and we going to Celtic Thunder!!! Are you OK now?"
She buried her head in the pillow both embarrassed by her initial disappointment and overjoyed that I was taking her to see Celtic Thunder.
Jennie's response: "You're a jerk!"
As it turns out we will also take our 15 month old daughter. The real reason Jennie has fallen in love with Celtic Thunder is because Piper, as you can see in the photo, is absolutely mesmerized by the four Irishmen and one Scotsman. It's gotta be the accents, right?
I'm certain that my greatest enjoyment will be found in watching Piper watch her favorite boy band.
