Karen Preisser!!!
She was everything a 3rd grade boy could want.
Once I fell captive to her stunning beauty, every day after school I would call her on my rotary dial telephone. Her mother would usually answer, I'd shyly ask for Karen and then when the elementary school girl of my dreams said,"Hello" I quickly blurted out, "I love you" and hung up.
Why didn't I just take the easy way out? In those days it was perfectly acceptable to write a short note and offer the recipient two empty boxes. The note would provide crystal clear instructions:
Check the "yes" box if you like me and check the "no" box if you don't like me yet (there was always room for hope).
With 43 years of wisdom and many years of brutal rejection behind me, I've finally smartened up.
